Vineyard Notes

We source fruit from Napa Valley AVA including: Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.

Winemaking

For Quilt Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, the winemaking process started by picking fruit at precisely the right moment. Often this meant waiting until ripeness--determined both by testing sugar levels as well as by assessing other aspects of phenological readiness--had reached an ideal point. Once in the cellar, we kept lots separated by vineyard.

Ageing

While the wine underwent extended maceration, we re-evaluated the progress of each lot before moving the wine to small French oak barrels (70% new oak, 30% seasoned) where it underwent a secondary fermentation. Our final blend (100% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon) came about after numerous blind tastings.

  • Quilt Wines is a Napa Valley wine producer based in Rutherford, producing a small range of labels from fruit sourced across the Napa Valley AVA. It primarily focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay but also produces a red blend. The name Quilt is a reference to Napa's "rolling patchwork of vineyards".

Quilt was established by fifth generation Napa winemaker Joseph (Joe) Wagner, who initially worked alongside his father at Caymus Vineyards before establishing Belle Glos in the early 2000s. Although based in Rutherford, Wagner's wines, including Quilt, Belle Glos and his Copper Cane range, are sold through the Quilt & Co. tasting room established in central Napa town.

Four main labels are produced: the Quilt Cabernet Sauvignon; the Quilt Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon; The Fabric of the Land red blend (including Merlot, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Petit Verdot); and the Quilt Chardonnay.

The red wines are made from fruit sourced across the Napa Valley AVA, predominantly on the valley floor although up to a third of the wine can include fruit from higher elevations in the area. The Chardonnay is primarily Carneros-grown.
